I am the wife of a Catholic deacon living in Des Moines Iowa. My husband Larry was ordained in 2006.
We have two children and five grandchildren.. Our daughter and her family live in Ireland, and our son and his family live in Franklin Massachusetts.
I’m surprised Sidney Callahan is not on their board. http://ethicscenter.nd.edu/about/callahan.shtml One of my favorite, Catholic bioethicists (I’ve heard her speak at numerous conferences and read much of her literature), Sidney has written wonderful things on how abortion is not a choice because we, as a nation, do not provide proper resources to those in crisis pregnancies. If/when we start giving women in need the help and resources they need (ie. Gabriel Project) , abortions are likely to start to drop because we will be giving women options for choosing life. In my ethics classes in college we discussed what women who were pregnant and felt trapped truly needed: affordable prenatal care and the ability to take off work for that care without it ruining them financially, loving encouragement and guidance on how the adoption process works if they feel they cannot raise the child, assistance with the items they need to raise a child if they decide to keep the baby. Women will more likely choose life when given a TRUE choice and not feeling that abortion is the only, cheapest, or easiest answer.
